Jacob J. Nikkel minister, farmer, and carpenter, was born August 17, 1905 to Jacob and Maria Nikkel in Rosenfeld Manitoba. He grew up the third child in a family of 13 and attended the private school where his father taught. In 1925 Nikkel was baptized and became a member of the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church. He married Margaret Harder in 1934. Their marriage produced 12 children including seven daughters and five sons. During the first five years of their marriage Nikkel attended Winkler Bible School where he earned a Sunday School and Ministers Diploma. It was during this time that Rev. H.S. Voth rebaptized both Nikkel and his wife by immersion. They then joined the Winkler Mennonite Brethern Church. Nikkel worked for the Manitoba Mennonite Brethern Home Missions until 1942 when he bought a farm in Elm Creek district. For the next 30 years he made his livelihood by farming and doing woodwork. In 1947 Nikkel was ordained to the ministry at the Newton Mennonite Brethren Church. He then worked in various churches including Wingham and Newton until he retired from farming in 1973. After selling the farm he and his wife moved to Morden where Nikkel worked as chaplain at Tabor Home. The last two years of his life Nikkel remained active with hospital visitations and occasional preaching. Jacob J. Nikkel died February 1, 1977.
This fonds contains a 57 page commentary on the book of Ephesians and a folder containing a selection of Nikkel's notes and sermons including his last sermon which he preached at the funeral of a friend just minutes before his own death.
